Carers' Conference 2011

Anglesey AbbeyThe first East of England Stroke Forum Stroke Carers Conference was held in the beautiful setting of Anglesey Abbey in Lode, Cambridge on 11th October 2011.

This was attended by 150 carers, cared-fors and health and social care professionals.

The key issues emerging were:

  • Communication: what's available; delays in decisions
  • Access to support once in the community. GPs are not necessarily a good source of access/knowledge of what support carers can access eg Carers Assessment
  • Psychological support
  • Long term care
  • 'old strokes' - getting access once out of the loop eg to personal health plans, personal health budgets

As a direct result of the conference, The Strategic Health Authority has agreed to pick these up as part of delivering the requirements of the Accelerated Stroke Improvement Programme metrics.

It is hoped that this conference will now be an annual event.
